Frank Turner - Piece Hall - Halifax
After a record-breaking spell hot and dry weather, Frank Turner took to the stage at the Piece Hall, just as the heavens opened. Which, at this iconic outdoor venue could have been considered a problem, but tonight, not at all!
The mixed crowd (Yorkshire folk and people from other places), many clad in ponchos, many just a t-shirt, were revved up and ready for a raucous evening and the moment he started his set by launching into “I Still Believe” the dancing and singing began.
The tempo and energy didn’t drop, and it wasn’t long before the crowd were dancing in circles with Frank orchestrating from the stage.
We blew through “Try This At Home” and “Never Mind The Back Problems” before confronting the elephant-at-the-Piece-Hall, Frank Turner is not from Yorkshire! This led to the obligatory “Yorkshire” chant. He even admitted, he’s from even further south than London…
Does that world even exist?
On we went again, more getting wet, more bouncing, more bangers, all ably supported by the Sleeping Souls and the crowd.
During the barrage of all these songs there were truly intimate and touching moments where Frank discussed mental issues/mental strength and some of his own battles and self doubt.
The next moment he has thousands of Yorkshire men and women pirouetting in circles in the historic woven wool market. Brilliant.
Continuing at pace, there was the Wall Of Hugs, his very gentle version of a heavy metal wall of death, crowd surfing and the slo-mo mosh.
There was also a shout out to local independent venues. Go to The Parish in Huddersfield, a great place to support your local music scene!
Then all too soon we were on the final song… “Four Simple Words”- I want to dance, and we did. We sang, we danced, we pirouetted. We enjoyed, on an amazing, if slightly damp June evening.
